The Bioinformatics Satellite Laboratory is located at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus, JGD-215.  This room contains the computing equipment and software programs necessary for sequence and genotype data analysis, thesis writing, among other software programs.

For specific information regarding BSL software programs for data analysis, please contact SGf personnel.

The following are the BSL Terms of Use.

  1. Every User must sign these terms prior use of the facility.

  2. All equipment located in the BSL is intended for research and academic use only.

  3. BSL personnel has complete autonomy and authority over BSL equipment.

  4. Equipment must not be taken out of the facility, unless approved by BSL personnel.
  5. Faculty members will have access to BSL to conduct their courses and have priority use of the room during scheduled hours with prior notification to BSL personnel.
    1. Under no circumstances shall any User interrupt a course session, unless given consent by the professor.
  6. BSL general rules of use:

    1. Users will be able to use the BSL computers during regular business hours:
      Mondays through Fridays from 8:00am to 4:00pm.
      • BSL will be locked outside regular business hours and will be available for authorized Users only.  See security-related rules below.
      • Any circumstances arising after normal business hours should be reported to BSL personnel as soon as possible
      • For emergencies, please call the University’s emergency numbers: 787-764-0000, ext. 3131, 3535 or for medical emergencies: ext. 2020
    2. The BSL will not be reserved for one person only, unless for any given course.  See reservations criteria below.
    3. Use of BSL telephone for personal issues is not allowed.
    4. Use of chat programs (e.g. MSN Messenger, Skype, among others) is restricted, unless used for research, academic or emergency purposes.
    5. Internet browsing will be monitored and saved automatically, please refrain from accessing information unrelated to your research or academic purposes.
    6. No food or drinks are allowed inside the BSL
      • Users with the medical need to eat during specific times a day should move outside the BSL to have their appropriate snacks or meals.
  7. BSL computer use (program installations):

    1. Only BSL personnel will have administrator accounts with unlimited access.
    2. Only BSL personnel will authorize the installation of any program on any of the computers.
    3. All Users, with no exceptions, will be assigned specific accounts with limited access.
    4. To solicit a specific software program, please contact BSL personnel.
  8. BSL Software programs and data analysis.

    1. BSL or SGf personnel are not responsible for data editing or analysis.
    2. BSL and/or SGf personnel offer training sessions for data analysis software use.  Please contact SGf personnel to make the appropriate appointments.
  9. BSL computer reservation criteria:

    1. BSL computers may be reserved for use for a specific date and period of time, as follows:
      • Reservations must be made with at least half a day in advance; Users must sign a log sheet provided by BSL personnel.
      • The maximum time-limit for any given reservation will be of eight (8) hours per day requested.  When this time expires, the computer must be available for use immediately, Users must log off, sign the log sheet provided by BSL personnel and/or renew their reservation.
  10. BSL security-related rules:

    1. All authorized Users leaving after normal business hours are completely responsible for locking the entrance door and leaving room secured.
    2. Every Principal Investigator will provide the facility with a list of potential Users in order to maintain security requirements to a maximum and provide a safe environment for its Userss.  This list will be provided by the BSL personnel whenever needed.
      • If BSL is used for academic purposes, then this list is not necessary
      • BSL personnel will reserve the right of admission to any person not included in these lists, unless updated verbally or through written agreements.
    3. BSL will reserve the right of entry to any person with questionable behavior.
      • Questionable behavior includes harassment and any other hostile behavior towards another User, BSL personnel and/or UPR administrative personnel.  This includes any incidents reported outside regular business hours
      • For specific rules and requirements regarding questionable behavior, please refer to the Human Resources office of the University of Puerto Rico, 787-764-0000 ext. 1-5471.
    4. Each principal investigator will be held completely accountable for any User involved in any unusual events within the facility and involving any of the equipment.  Visiting researchers or Professors will be held accountable for their own actions.
    5. The UPR-BSL and BSL personnel will not be held accountable for any situation resulting from breaking these terms.
  11. Definitions:

    1. BSL stands for Bioinformatics Satellite Laboratory.
    2. JGD stands for Julio García Díaz building.
    3. BSL personnel refers to the Sequencing and Genotyping facility (SGf) staff.
    4. User/Users refers to every UPR-RP Principal Investigator, Researcher, Faculty Member, and also any Visiting Professor, Visiting Researcher, Graduate or Undergraduate Student, and/or SGf Client.
